TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s Lee Hao-yu (李灝宇) hit his first career Major League Baseball home run, delivering a clutch pinch-hit that powered the Detroit Tigers to an 8-3 comeback win over the Cincinnati Reds, per CNA.
Lee’s two-run homer erased a 2-3 deficit and helped seal the victory. The 23-year-old was called up from the minor leagues on April 17, becoming the 19th Taiwanese player to reach the majors. This season, he joins fellow Taiwanese players Teng Kai-wei (鄧愷威) of the Houston Astros and Cheng Tsung-che (鄭宗哲) of the Boston Red Sox in MLB.
Lee entered the game as a pinch hitter at the top of the seventh with a runner on base and no outs. He connected on a 146 kph four-seam fastball from Reds reliever Sam Moll, sending the ball over the center-field wall.
Lee showed visible excitement as he rounded the bases at a quick trot. Teammate Gleyber Torres, who had been on first base, gestured for him to slow down as he approached home plate, prompting a comment from the broadcast team that Torres might be overtaken, per CNA.
Since his promotion from Triple-A, Lee has appeared in seven games, recording four hits in 19 at-bats with three RBIs and a .211 batting average.
