TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s government on Friday thanked the US after Washington criticized China for pressuring countries to block President Lai Ching-te’s (賴清德) trip to Eswatini.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the US administration and Congress have voiced concern over the disruption and urged Beijing to stop pressuring Taiwan, per CNA. Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) thanked the US for its backing and support from like-minded partners.
The ministry said a US State Department spokesperson said that the countries involved appeared to have acted under China’s direction. The spokesperson said such actions undermine the safety and dignity of routine visits by Taiwanese officials and misuse international aviation systems.
Washington described the case as part of Beijing’s broader campaign to intimidate Taiwan and its partners. It urged China to halt military, diplomatic, and economic pressure and instead engage in meaningful dialogue.
Lin said Taiwan is a sovereign country with the right to conduct normal diplomatic engagements. He said Taipei will continue to work with partners to safeguard aviation safety and regional stability.
