TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen (盧秀燕) and American Institute in Taiwan Director Raymond Greene have discussed the development of drones, reports said Friday.
The KMT mayor and US envoy met Thursday as Taiwan-born NASA astronaut Kjell Lindgren visited the city. Lu said that during their conversations, she understood how strong global demand was for drones and other uncrewed vehicles, per CNA.
Greene agreed that both countries needed to cooperate on developing the industry into Taiwan’s next strong sector following semiconductors, the mayor said. She added that some of the key elements involved in the manufacturing of drones were present in Taichung, such as aerospace, semiconductors, precision machinery, and optics.
Using technology from the US, Taichung could develop into a key center for the development of the drone industry, with the US as a huge market, Lu said.
She also described the AIT director as a “good friend” who would always seek her out to talk when he visited Taichung. Lu has been tipped as a possible KMT candidate for the presidential elections expected in January 2028.
