TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Individuals who report their income tax using their smartphone will be eligible for a top prize of NT$50,000 (US$1,580), the Ministry of Finance said Thursday.
The drawing in August will determine 19,586 winners for prize money totaling NT$5.25 million, per CNA. Income tax reporting is required from May 1 to June 1, though officials pointed out that tax offices would remain closed on May 1, a public holiday.
Apart from the maximum NT$50,000 prize, participants could also win cash prizes from NT$2,000 to NT$20,000 and vouchers from NT$200 to NT$500.
After the drawing in August, the winners of cash prizes will receive a registered letter informing them of the deadline for picking up the money. Winners of vouchers will receive a text message with instructions on how to collect their prize, officials said.
The ministry cautioned that the text messages will not include links to any websites, warning taxpayers to be aware of scams.
