TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — American Institute in Taiwan Director Raymond Greene visited KMT Chair Cheng Li-wun (鄭麗文) at the opposition party’s headquarters Wednesday.
Posting on Facebook, AIT wrote that both sides agreed that differences between Taiwan and China should be “resolved by peaceful means, free from coercion,” in a way acceptable to both peoples.
The post did not detail the topics Greene and Cheng discussed. The KMT chair met Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Beijing on April 10 and is planning a visit to the US, tentatively scheduled for June.
Officials and lawmakers in the US have called on the KMT to pass a NT$1.27 trillion (US$40 billion) special defense budget proposed by President Lai Ching-te’s (賴清德) government. KMT legislators had blocked the package for months before agreeing to submit a version of their own and also consider a defense budget proposed by the smaller opposition TPP.
On her Facebook page, Cheng wrote that peace with China was vital for regional stability, while also serving the core interests of the international community. She added that cross-strait relations should “continue to be advanced through dialogue and peaceful development.”
