TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — DPP Legislator Su Chiao-hui (蘇巧慧) said she has widened her lead over New Taipei mayoral rival Lee Shu-chuan (李四川) in an internal party poll by 4%.
Su said polling figures are not definitive but expressed confidence after overcoming an earlier double-digit deficit to lead in the latest internal survey, per ETtoday. She said New Taipei City needs a more energetic and capable mayor.
A pro-DPP talk show reported Tuesday that Su leads Lee by 4.2 percentage points in a hypothetical head-to-head matchup, per SETN. Political commentator Lee Cheng-hao (李正皓) said Lee had held about a 10-point lead in late 2025 and early January 2026, but Su has since reversed the gap and continues to expand her advantage.
TPP Chair Huang Kuo-chang (黃國昌), another contender in the race, downplayed the significance of internal polling. He said such surveys can be used as political messaging tools, per UDN.
During the talk show, media commentator Kang Jen-chun (康仁俊) attributed Lee’s slide to campaign missteps, including sending unedited footage to media outlets. He also criticized Lee for pledging to resolve traffic issues in Yonghe and Zhonghe districts before later suggesting the problems were overstated.
DPP Legislator Wang Yi-chuan (王義川) questioned Lee’s proposal to build a bridge linking Luzhou District and the Shezihdao peninsula, noting the development restrictions on the peninsula. DPP Taipei City Council caucus also expressed skepticism, saying similar proposals frequently emerge during election periods without significant progress, per Liberty Times.
Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安) said the proposal had already been forwarded during Lee’s tenure as deputy mayor, per UDN. He added that departments are evaluating their feasibility.
Commenting on Lee’s path forward, political commentator Luo You-zhi (羅友志) said Lee may need to distance himself from the administrations of New Taipei Mayor Hou You-yi (侯友宜) and former Mayor Eric Chu (朱立倫), per China Times. He added that some voters may be inclined to support a change in city leadership.
Luo also said the DPP — particularly figures aligned with former Premier Su Tseng-chang (蘇貞昌), Su Chiao-hui’s father — has become dominant in Banqiao and Tucheng districts, which together account for about a quarter of the city’s population.
Separately, the Taiwan Public Opinion Center said its analysis found Lee leads in media exposure and favorability, while Su outperforms him in social media engagement, per UP Media.
