TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) said Tuesday the Cabinet will appoint confirmed members of the Central Election Commission and submit three new nominees to the legislature.
The legislature has confirmed You Ying-lung (游盈隆) as CEC chair, along with Su Jia-hong (蘇嘉宏), Su Tzu-chiao (蘇子喬) and Lee Li-chung (李禮仲) as commissioners, while rejecting nominees put forward by the ruling DPP, per UDN. The Cabinet has accused the opposition of acting in bad faith and previously said it would delay formal appointments until it sees “goodwill.”
The CEC has warned that prolonged delays in appointments could affect preparations for local elections scheduled for late 2026.
Responding to DPP Legislator Wu Szu-yao (吳思瑤), Cho said he would appoint the four confirmed members and submit three new nominees on the same day, per China Times. He also called on Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜), Deputy Speaker Johnny Chiang (江啟臣) and party caucuses to support the new candidates.
Asked by DPP Legislator Fan Yun (范雲) how he would avoid further obstruction, Cho said the new nominees would be professionals from legal or civil service backgrounds with no party affiliations, per CNA.
A source familiar with the matter said that during Cho’s visit to Han in March to seek support in negotiating with the KMT, Han declined to intervene, citing his role as speaker, per UP Media. Han advised Cho to engage directly with the KMT caucus.
During the meeting, Cabinet Secretary-General Xavier Chang (張惇涵) said he had met with KMT Legislative Caucus Secretary-General Lo Chih-chiang (羅智強), though Han indicated that any coordination would require input from the KMT Caucus Convener Fu Kun-chi (傅崐萁). Chang later sought a meeting with Fu but was unable to meet him.
Ahead of a planned visit by Cabinet officials to the KMT caucus, Cabinet Deputy Secretary-General Ruan Jhao-syong (阮昭雄) accused the opposition of blocking the 2026 budget and delaying key infrastructure projects. Opposition lawmakers, who argue the budget is flawed, objected to the remarks and did not respond positively to the outreach.
