TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The Taiwan High Court on Tuesday sentenced an Army officer to 12 years in prison for selling pictures of military secrets in return for a total of NT$67,770 (US$2,155).
Sergeant Sun Chu-chuan (孫楚荃) will also be detained for a further two months from May 4, while appeals are still possible, per CNA. The incidents occurred during his military service at a transportation unit on the outlying island of Matsu.
From June 2021 until December 2022, Sun downloaded military and state secrets on his office computer and took pictures of the documents with his smartphone. He sent the pictures by the messaging app Telegram to three people using fictitious names, prosecutors said.
Sun sent pictures eight times after promises he would receive money to help him pay his debts. He denied having committed any crimes during the investigation, but admitted guilt during the High Court trial.
