TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — KMT Chair Cheng Li-wun (鄭麗文) said she plans to visit the US in June.
Cheng said in a radio interview that she understands the importance and influence of the US and hopes to share her takeaways from meeting Chinese leader Xi Jinping, CNA reported.
Cheng met Xi in Beijing during a weeklong trip to China earlier this month, framing it as a peace mission. Upon her return, she claimed China’s military threats against Taiwan are directed at Taiwan independence supporters rather than the general public.
Cheng said she aims to visit Washington, DC, to hold talks with high-level government officials. She said some senior US lawmakers have already expressed interest in meeting her and encouraged her to visit.
Cheng warned that a “Cold War 2.0” was emerging. She argued that countries should avoid zero-sum thinking and instead promote reconciliation, dialogue, and mutual respect.
Taiwan holds a unique position and voice and should try to persuade the international community to move in the right direction, Cheng said. She added that her views have already sparked debate in the US, which she sees as positive.
The party leader said she hoped US policymakers would focus on fostering peace rather than conflict.
