TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — China’s defense ministry said Friday its military activities near Taiwan are justified and blamed the Taiwan government for rising tensions, Reuters reported.
The ministry said its operations around Taiwan are intended to "safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity." It described its actions as “entirely justified, reasonable,” and accused Taiwan’s government of misrepresenting the situation.
In return, Taiwan has criticized China for regularly sending warships and military aircraft near its territory.
China refuses to engage with Taiwan President Lai Ching-te (賴清德), calling him a separatist, according to Reuters. Lai has responded that only Taiwan’s people can decide their future and urged lawmakers to pass a stalled defense budget, stressing that strength is needed to maintain peace.
The US has supported Taiwan’s defense efforts and continues to supply arms, Reuters said. In return, China has repeatedly urged Washington to halt these sales, saying they increase regional risks.
