TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan must deepen ties with major economies to safeguard its interests, China studies expert Chen Sung-hsing (陳松興) said Thursday.
Speaking at a policy simulation forum in Taipei, Chen said Taiwan should expand cooperation beyond the US, per CNA. He warned that any severe disruption to Taiwan’s economy would have far-reaching global consequences.
The event, hosted by National Chengchi University’s Institute of International Relations and other groups, examined political, economic, and military scenarios under intensifying great power competition.
Chen said a conflict in the Taiwan Strait would damage not only Taiwan but also China. It would also disrupt trade flows critical to Japan, South Korea, and Southeast Asia.
He said Taiwan must strengthen its own resilience while reducing overreliance on any single partner. He added that external support alone cannot guarantee economic security.
He also called for greater emphasis on freedom of navigation to align global economic interests with regional stability.
National Chengchi University professor Lee Tung-hao (李桐豪) said Taiwan should establish a dedicated crisis management agency under the Cabinet. He said such a body, similar to the US Federal Emergency Management Agency, would improve coordination beyond military-led responses.
Former legislator Lei Chien (雷倩) said Taiwan should continue strengthening resilience while maintaining dialogue. She said sustained engagement is essential to preserving peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.
