TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The DPP on Tuesday nominated Deputy Justice Minister Huang Shih-chieh (黃世杰) as its candidate for Taoyuan mayor.
The party’s election strategy committee recommended Huang for the race, citing his local roots and experience, per CNA. The nomination will be submitted to the Central Executive Committee for approval, with a press conference planned if confirmed.
The committee also tapped former Legislator Chuang Ching-cheng (莊競程) to run for Hsinchu mayor, per Liberty Times. Both nominations are expected to be finalized soon as the party gears up for local elections.
DPP Taoyuan chapter head Huang Fu Shu-hsiang (黃傅淑香) said Huang’s entry into the race is welcome. She said an early start would help build voter recognition as he prepares to challenge incumbent Chang San-cheng (張善政).
Hsu Chia-jui (許家睿), convener of the DPP caucus in the Taoyuan City Council, said Huang combines policy expertise with electoral experience. He added that Huang’s low-profile style and grassroots work align with voter preferences for pragmatic candidates.
Councilor Wei Yun (魏筠) highlighted Huang’s legal background and legislative experience. She said Huang’s relative youth would allow for more energetic grassroots engagement.
