TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Police rescued a British cyclist suffering from hypothermia and exhaustion on Saturday along a mountainous highway in central Taiwan.
Officers patrolling the Dayuling section of the Central Cross-Island Highway found an overturned bicycle near the 37-kilometer marker, with a foreign woman sitting nearby in apparent distress. Police from Hehuan Police Station determined she was experiencing hypothermia and severe fatigue, per CNA.
After communicating with her in English, the woman said she was too weak to continue because of the low temperatures at high altitude. Officers checked for visible injuries before transporting her back to the station, where they provided hot tea, hand warmers, and heating equipment to help her recover.
Once her condition stabilized, the woman said she was from the United Kingdom and a popular Youtuber who has cycled around the world. She said she had come to Taiwan alone to challenge herself by cycling around the island.
She had set out from Nantou County toward Taroko National Park in Hualien County to film scenic content, but underestimated the cold mountain climate and the difficulty of the route, leading to hypothermia and a dangerous situation.
Police also provided her with hot food and helped arrange accommodation at a nearby guesthouse for the night. The woman expressed gratitude for the officers’ assistance, saying their timely help may have saved her life and left her with a strong impression of Taiwanese hospitality.
Authorities reminded the public that mountain weather can change rapidly, with significant temperature differences between day and night. They advised those planning hiking or long-distance cycling trips to check weather conditions in advance and prepare adequate warm clothing to ensure safety.
