TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Deputy Foreign Minister Francois Wu (吳志中) called for closer ties with Quebec after a four-day visit to Canada last week.
The deputy foreign minister delivered a keynote speech last Wednesday at a Montreal conference on Taiwan-Quebec relations, emphasizing that Taiwan and Quebec are defending their identities, according to CNA. He said both countries have a responsibility to protect shared values and deepen cooperation.
Wu expressed hope that Quebec would establish an office in Taiwan and dispatch officials to boost mutually beneficial cooperation.
During Wu's trip, he visited the executive and legislative branches in Quebec and held meetings with Canadian lawmakers. He also exchanged views with scholars and experts from major Quebec universities and think tanks.
As Canada seeks to diversify trade amid US tariff pressures, Wu said that “Taiwan is very willing to purchase Canadian oil, natural gas, and mineral resources.” He said geopolitical instability highlights the importance of energy and technological security.
