TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – South Korea on Friday removed the naming of Taiwan as “China (Taiwan)” from its electronic arrival card system.
The change came after the Ministry of Foreign Affairs requested a correction for several months, and threatened to adjust the naming in Taiwan’s online immigration system from “Republic of Korea” to “Korea (South).” The ministry had originally set the end of March as a deadline for the change, but suspended the measure as South Korea looked to make revisions.
The issue arose when Taiwanese travelers notified the ministry in December that drop-down menus on the South Korean e-arrival card website mentioned “China (Taiwan)” in the fields for “place of departure” and “next destination.” On Friday, South Korea deleted the two fields from the website, per CNA.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the change, saying it would benefit exchanges between the two countries. The adjustment will be more practical for travelers and simplify entry procedures, the ministry said, expressing the hope that Taiwan and South Korea can deepen their relations.
The South Korean foreign ministry denied that the request from Taiwan was the reason for the changes to the e-arrival card website.
