TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A wave of Harajuku-inspired fashion is set to arrive in Taipei as Japanese label Wego prepares to enter the Taiwan market.
Rooted in the colorful, expressive chaos of Tokyo’s Harajuku district, Harajuku fashion is known for its spirit of experimentation rather than conformity, spanning everything from playful layered streetwear to more extreme subcultural styles, including gothic and lolita influences. Wego has long positioned itself as a brand inspired by this aesthetic, according to Bella and Go Tokyo.
The brand’s first store is set to open in May at Eslite Spectrum Wuchang in Ximending. The location was chosen for its strong youth culture, vibrant street fashion scene, and steady flow of local and international visitors.
A flagship store in central Taipei is also planned, highlighting the company’s push to expand its physical presence in the city. Unlike essentials-driven retailers such as Uniqlo or trend-focused basics from Gu, Wego leans into experimentation, encouraging shoppers to treat fashion as personal expression rather than uniform dressing.
The brand is targeting around 20 stores across Taiwan by 2030, reflecting its confidence in sustained demand for Japanese street culture among Taiwanese consumers. It cites strong social media visibility and ongoing cross-cultural fashion exchange as key drivers of its expansion strategy.
Rather than functioning purely as retail spaces, WEGO says its stores are designed to reflect local youth culture — environments shaped by each city’s rhythm, where shopping blends with styling inspiration and personal expression.
