TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Labor Minister Hung Shen-han (洪申翰) said Thursday that Taiwan could bring in its Indian migrant workers later this year.
Taiwan and India signed a labor agreement in February 2024, per CNA. By the end of that year, a bilateral working-level meeting determined that the first migrant workers would include 1,000 Indians, with 5% recruited through direct hiring.
The Legislative Yuan's Social Welfare and Environmental Hygiene Committee invited Hung, to deliver a report on preventing forced labor and fair recruitment. The report assessed Taiwan's efforts to align its migrant worker system with international human rights and supply chain governance standards and was followed by questions.
Hung said Taiwan and India are finalizing administrative procedures, document verification, and health check standards to ensure smoother bilateral coordination.
Hung said, “The first group could potentially arrive this year.” He noted that while the direct-hiring target is set at 5%, he hopes it will be higher — depending on industry demand.
