TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Legislative Deputy Speaker Johnny Chiang (江啟臣) on Tuesday met with a Canadian parliamentary delegation, calling for more cooperation on international issues.
The nine-member delegation, led by Senator Leo Housakos, visited the Legislative Yuan, per CNA. Chiang was joined by KMT Legislator Chen Ching-hui (陳菁徽), DPP Legislator Lin Chu-yin (林楚茵), and TPP Legislator Liu Shu-bin (劉書彬).
Chiang welcomed the delegation, noting it was many members’ first time visiting Taiwan. He said exchanges strengthen mutual understanding between the parliaments and people of Taiwan and Canada.
Chiang praised Canada’s cross-party support for Taiwan, including backing Taiwan’s participation in the WHO and Interpol. He also highlighted strong people-to-people connections, noting that many Taiwanese youth study or work in Canada.
These interactions form a solid foundation for governmental and parliamentary cooperation, Chiang said, citing trade and cultural exchanges.
On bilateral cooperation, Chiang pointed to agreements like the Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreements. He added that there remains room for more cooperation in education and supply chain resilience.
Housakos said Taiwan plays a key role in the global democratic community. He stressed the importance of private and parliamentary exchanges for long-term cooperation.
