TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday said it has revoked certain diplomatic privileges for Danish representatives after Denmark changed the designation of Taiwanese nationals on residence permits.
Eric Huang (黃鈞耀), director-general of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Department of European Affairs, said Denmark has, since 2024, changed the nationality and place of birth listed on residence permits for Taiwanese from “Taiwan” to “China,” per CNA. Huang said the representative office continues to communicate with Danish authorities, and Taipei has revoked certain privileges for Danish representatives in Taiwan while continuing to review other measures.
He stressed that “the Ministry of Foreign Affairs solemnly calls on the Danish government to propose a solution acceptable to Taiwan as soon as possible and to immediately correct the erroneous nationality designation on Danish residence permits for Taiwanese.” He also called on Denmark to adhere to EU diplomatic practices and safeguard long-standing Taiwan-Denmark cooperation.
Huang warned the issue could seriously damage Denmark’s image and business reputation in Taiwan if left unresolved. He said it could also undermine bilateral relations and future cooperation between the two sides.
