TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s stock market closed higher Tuesday, tracking gains in US markets over the holiday period, while trading activity remained relatively subdued as investors remained cautious.
The Taiwan Capitalization Weighted Stock Index (TAIEX) rose 657.39 points to close at 33,229.82. Turnover fell to NT$564.34 billion (US$17.7 billion), reflecting restrained participation, according to CNA and CTEE.
TSMC rose 2.76% to NT$1,860, its session high, accounting for roughly 400 points of the index’s increase. Delta Electronics gained 5.94% to NT$1,515, MediaTek edged up 0.34% to NT$1,470, while Foxconn slipped 0.52% to NT$192.
Mature-node foundry stocks moved higher following a new round of price adjustments. Vanguard International Semiconductor, which previously announced a 10% increase in wafer prices effective April, closed at the daily limit, while UMC rose 8.77%, according to CTEE.
Low Earth orbit satellite-related stocks also advanced, as SpaceX prepares to offer shares to the public. Universal Microwave Technology and WNC both hit their daily limits, while New Era Electronics and Compeq Manufacturing also posted gains.
Silicon photonics-related shares recorded solid gains. LandMark Optoelectronics and Browave both closed at their daily limits, reaching NT$2,005 and NT$1,045, respectively, with both setting new highs.
Analysts said the index has yet to build sustained upward momentum. Limited follow-up buying has kept overall trading volume lower, according to CTEE.
The softer trading volume reflects continued caution as global markets monitor developments in US-Iran negotiations. Analysts said geopolitical uncertainty could lead to increased volatility in the next session.
Prudential Financial Maxima Fund manager Kuo Ming-yu (郭明玉) said Taiwan’s technology sector continues to show stable fundamentals. If the TAIEX holds above 33,000 and remains above early March lows, the broader trend could stabilize once external uncertainties ease.
Kuo said investors may consider selective positioning. He suggested focusing on areas such as foundry services, advanced packaging interfaces, semiconductor equipment and materials, specialty chemicals, optical communications, intellectual property, AI servers, and electronic components.
