TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan carriers on Tuesday raised fuel surcharges for international flights by more than 157% due to surging global oil prices driven by the Iran War.
The Civil Aviation Administration said the surcharge hike follows a sharp increase in fuel prices announced by CPC Corporation, per CNA. Short-haul surcharges were raised from NT$559 (US$17.50) to NT$1,438, and long-haul surcharges from NT$1,454 to NT$3,739.
Short-haul routes cover Asia, while long-haul routes include Europe, the Americas, Africa, Oceania, Antarctica, India, and the Middle East. Airlines have updated their websites to reflect the new rates.
China Airlines said additional fuel costs per passenger are NT$16,745 for long-haul and NT$3,610 for short-haul flights. After approved surcharges, it is absorbing 77.67% and 60.18% of the increases.
EVA Air reported added costs of NT$24,736 for long-haul and NT$4,139 for short-haul passengers. It is covering 85% and 65% of the increases after surcharges.
Starlux Airlines said added costs are NT$8,266 for long-haul and NT$1,915 for short-haul flights. It is absorbing 64% and 42% of the additional costs after surcharges.
