TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Unsightly heaps of white bags filled with waste from construction by roadsides pose a threat to Taipei traffic, reports said Friday.
The stacked bags also formed an impediment to public works and are a blight on the cityscape, according to TPP City Councilor Chen You-cheng (陳宥丞). He said the bags remained by the side of the roads because the city government was unable to process the waste fast enough, per CNA.
The city’s Parks and Street Lights Office said waste from public work projects was usually moved to Taipei Port in New Taipei’s Bali District. Only small-scale projects like the renovation of sidewalks were unable to remove the waste immediately, though changes in procedures would improve the situation, the office said.
While acknowledging that works on new mass rapid transit lines produced large volumes of waste, the Department of Rapid Transit Systems said they all amounted to recyclable resources. Moving the waste from the MRT sites to Taipei Port was proceeding as usual without causing problems for the mass transit works, according to the department.
Chen said new bus shelters could not be completed because excessive waste was hampering the installation of electric systems. Similar problems occurred with the dredging of ditches and with slope reinforcement work. The city councilor called for talks between Taipei and New Taipei to allow for a more fluid transfer of construction waste to Taipei Port.
