TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — KMT Chair Cheng Li-wun (鄭麗文) said she was willing to meet with President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) to demonstrate cross-party reconciliation and unity in Taiwan.
Cheng said she was open to holding discussions with Lai either before or after her trip to China next Tuesday. At the invitation of Chinese leader Xi Jinping, Cheng will visit Jiangsu, Shanghai, and Beijing over six days.
The chair said Taiwan could not afford irresponsible political gambles that could lead to military tension or war, per CNA. Cheng said the KMT must act responsibly by expanding opportunities for peace. She called for dialogue between Taiwan’s ruling and opposition parties and said she hoped all parties could come together as one.
Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council said in a statement on Wednesday that peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait concern regional security and are also linked to the global economy. Cross-strait issues are not “family matters,” as claimed by the Chinese Communist Party, the council said.
The council also called on Cheng to take China’s coercion toward Taiwan seriously and uphold the principles of equality and dignity. The council urged Cheng to avoid aligning with Beijing’s political positions or falling victim to its United Front strategy.
