TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Poland emphasized its support for peace in the Taiwan Strait for the first time last month.
In response to a parliamentary inquiry on March 16, Deputy Foreign Minister Wladysław Bartoszewski said that Poland is “concerned about the growing tensions in the Taiwan Strait and (opposes) any unilateral attempts to change the status quo through the use of force or coercion.” He added that Warsaw rejected “any territorial changes initiated by hybrid actions and contrary to international law."
Bartoszewski said Poland considers the Indo-Pacific region as vital to upholding Poland's “security, prosperity, and international standing.” The Polish foreign ministry is bolstering military cooperation in the region, in cooperation with the defense ministry, he said.
The foreign minister said Poland is seeking more cooperation in the defense industry with regional countries such as South Korea and Japan, and with other partners, “in the context of shared security threats.”
“We trust that China is fully aware of the serious consequences of an escalating conflict in the Indo-Pacific region,” Bartoszewski said, adding that Poland maintains communication with Beijing at all levels.
Taiwan’s foreign ministry welcomed the statement on Wednesday, saying that the two countries share universal values such as democracy and freedom, according to a foreign ministry press release. It pledged to continue promoting exchanges to protect the rules-based international order and maintain global and regional peace.
