TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The KMT has decided to allow candidates for mayor and magistrate in four cities and counties to campaign for TPP city and council candidates, reports said Wednesday.
Most political parties traditionally threaten members who support candidates from other parties with disciplinary action, including expulsion. The KMT’s decision to relax the restrictions applied to New Taipei, Chiayi, Yilan County, and Keelung, per CNA.
The two opposition parties named separate candidates for the Nov. 28 elections in the three areas, but agreed on March 18 to use opinion polls to select joint candidates for each. KMT candidates running for mayor of New Taipei and Chiayi and for Yilan County magistrate were allowed to campaign for city and council candidates from the TPP in the same areas, the KMT said.
The opposition party said it had also added Keelung to the list because the KMT mayor there had a deputy mayor who was a TPP member. In other counties and cities, candidates could do the same only with the approval of the local KMT chapter and after reporting their intention to national party headquarters.
