TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Legislative Vice Speaker Johnny Chiang (江啟臣) has won the KMT primary for Taichung mayor, the opposition party said Tuesday.
He defeated Legislator and former Deputy Mayor Yang Chiung-ying (楊瓊瓔) in a race determined by the average of several opinion polls. The party did not release the detailed results of the polls, Liberty Times reported.
Legislator Ho Hsin-chun (何欣純) will represent the DPP in the Taichung race. The Nov. 28 election will determine who will succeed two-term KMT Mayor Lu Shiow-yen (盧秀燕), who has frequently been named as a potential candidate in the 2028 presidential election.
Appearing at the KMT news conference announcing the poll results Tuesday morning, Yang pledged her support for Chiang, per CNA. The legislative vice speaker, who was not present at the news conference, told reporters later he had called Yang to thank her.
Ho said the race for the mayoralty would center on progress. She said she would present ideas to make Taichung a better place to live for its residents.
