TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴淸德) and other leaders attended a memorial service to honor the country’s fallen soldiers on Sunday at the National Revolutionary Martyrs’ Shrine in Taipei.
In keeping with traditions of National Youth Day, Lai attended the 115th annual memorial ceremony for soldiers alongside Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴), Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰), and Vice Premier Cheng Li-chun (鄭麗君), according to a press release.
Lai read a memorial to honor those who gave their lives to protect the country and laid flowers in front of memorial tablets representing soldiers of different ethnic groups. The president also took time to greet family members of fallen Taiwanese soldiers who were in attendance.
The National Revolutionary Martyrs’ Shrine, located in Taipei’s Zhongshan District, houses the ancestral tablets of over 390,000 people who died while serving the country. Since 1998, civilians who have lost their lives performing acts of valor have also been inducted into the shrine.
The temple is known for its military honor guard, similar to those stationed at the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall.
