TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Trains and signaling systems on Taipei Mass Rapid Transit’s oldest line will be completely renovated, Taipei Rapid Transit Corporation said on the 30th anniversary of the line’s launch Saturday.
The first Taipei MRT train left Zhongshan Junior High School Station on what was then known as the “Muzha Line” at 6 a.m. on March 28, 1996. The line has since been extended to the Neihu District and renamed as the Wenhu Line.
The project to replace 76 trains and the related systems should be completed in 2041 for Metro Taipei’s 45th anniversary, per CNA. An exhibition at Daan Park Station will show the metro's history through uniforms and tickets until April 28.
At Saturday’s ceremony, Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安) said the daily number of travelers on the system had crossed the 2-million mark. Since the launch in 1996, Metro Taipei has registered a total of 14.5 billion passengers, he said.
The mayor described Metro Taipei as the world’s most reliable transit system, emphasizing the way it had changed travel habits as well as life in general in the capital region. The quality of service offered by the staff also made it a transit system to be proud of, Chiang added.
