TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The Taiwan People’s Party has applied to stage a protest in front of the Presidential Office Building Sunday after its founder, former Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je (柯文哲), was sentenced to 17 years in prison.
Both Ko and the opposition party condemned Thursday’s verdict by the Taipei District Court as a case of political persecution. The court found the former presidential candidate guilty of bribery, misappropriation of public funds, and embezzlement related to his 2024 campaign.
Police said Friday that Taipei City Government had already approved the TPP application to hold a protest on Ketagalan Boulevard, the road leading up to the Presidential Office Building, on Sunday, per CNA. As a result, police were also likely to allow the event to go ahead, Taipei’s Zhongzheng First Police Precinct said.
