TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Micron Technology officially unveiled its new fab in Tongluo Township, Miaoli County, on Thursday, with the company projected to significantly expand its workforce in Taiwan.
Micron Technology Taiwan Chair Lu Donghui (盧東暉) said he first visited the Tongluo plant on November 20, 2025, per CNA. From initial discussions with PSMC Chair Frank Huang (黃崇仁) and PSMC President Chu Hsien-kuo (朱憲國) to the completion of the fab purchase on Feb. 13, it took just 12 weeks, with the property transfer finalized on March 13.
Lu praised the collaboration between Micron and PSMC teams for the swift completion of the large-scale transaction. He added that the first batch of equipment arrived on March 23 and that the Tongluo fab will become part of Micron’s greater Taichung campus, further strengthening Micron’s advanced DRAM manufacturing footprint in Taiwan.
He said that turning a fab into a full production facility requires more than Micron’s internal team and depends on collaboration across the entire ecosystem, including equipment manufacturers, material suppliers, and construction firms. He noted that Micron will continue to advance Taiwan’s DRAM products and packaging capabilities, particularly in high-bandwidth memory, where the company maintains a leadership position.
As of January, Micron has invested more than NT$1.4 trillion (US$43.85 billion) in Taiwan. By the end of 2026, the Taiwan team is projected to reach 15,000 employees, with 1,000 based at the Tongluo fab.
Lu said that from the expansion of the Tainan fab in late 2024 to Thursday’s Tongluo unveiling, Micron Taiwan has shown exceptional efficiency, establishing itself as a pivotal manufacturing base for AI development. He pledged continued support for Taiwan’s AI industry and the future of the memory sector.
Micron’s Taiwan operations currently span Taoyuan, Tongluo in Miaoli, Taichung, and Tainan. The first three primarily produce DRAM, while the Tainan facility focuses on back-end packaging and testing.
