TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — One million international cruise passengers could pass through the Port of Keelung this year, according to CTEE.
In 2025, the port handled 1.11 million passengers, including 993,000 on international cruises. While bookings so far this year have not yet matched last year’s figures, rising oil prices driven by Middle East tensions could create additional opportunities for international cruise calls.
The port is upgrading its facilities to improve efficiency and passenger experience. Projects include the Keelung–Taipei–Suao harbor detection system, which combines automatic identification system tracking with artificial intelligence recognition to enhance vessel monitoring and navigation safety.
To make visits more comfortable during Keelung’s typically wet and cold winter weather, warm-water faucets will be trialed in West Passenger Center restrooms. The feature is more commonly found in high-latitude countries, according to Cruise in Taiwan.
Environmental initiatives are underway as well. The port will install its first high-voltage shore power system at East Pier 4, allowing ships to draw electricity from the dock instead of running their engines on diesel while docked, thereby reducing air pollution, according to CTEE.
