TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Czech Senate President Milos Vystrcil said he may visit Taiwan in early June.
Vystrcil plans to lead a large business delegation and hopes to strengthen cooperation between universities and research institutions, building on the success of his 2020 visit, per CNA. Taiwan has long been a reliable partner, Vystrcil told Czech magazine Respekt.
The two countries have engaged in more than 30 years of mutually beneficial cooperation, achieving significant results in trade, technological innovation, and culture, he said.
Vystrcil first visited Taiwan in 2020, declaring “I am Taiwanese” during a speech at the Legislative Yuan. Since then, he received multiple invitations to return to Taipei.
The senate president said that Taiwanese companies have created more than 24,000 jobs in the Czech Republic and emphasized the importance of security. Taiwan has become an indispensable player in global strategic chip production, he said.
Vystrcil said Taiwan has also made major progress in defense with its advanced technologies. This is equally important for Europe, which is being forced to rethink how to ensure its own security, he said.
Vystrcil said his upcoming trip is significant because “we must show courage and not forget the importance of expressing friendship and solidarity.” Democracies should support one another and engage face-to-face, he said.
The senate president’s planned trip comes as Prime Minister Andrej Babis is considering a visit to China.
