HONG KONG (Taiwan News) — Art Basel Hong Kong (ABHK) opens Friday, cementing its role as a premier cultural intersection in the Asia-Pacific.
This year’s edition features 240 galleries from 41 countries, with more than half maintaining spaces in the region. Among them, 15 prominent galleries with roots in Taiwan are set to lead the dialogue between historical modernism and contemporary social critique.
Lin & Lin Gallery presents a century of Chinese art, focusing on the tension between Eastern ink traditions and Western modernism. The booth features masters Sanyu (常玉), Wu Dayu (吳大羽), and Hsiao Chin (蕭勤), whose works demonstrate the transformation of Western oils into an Eastern visual language.
Eslite Gallery marks its first collaborative curation between its Taipei and Beijing teams. The exhibition features a rare dialogue between the late philosopher-artist Xiong Bingming (熊秉明) and sculptor Zhan Wang (展望). Exploring shared geometric philosophies, the booth juxtaposes Xiong’s structural voids with Zhan’s stainless steel reflections on natural collapse.
Notably, Zhan’s featured works have never before been exhibited in Taiwan or Hong Kong.

Tina Keng Gallery and TKG+ present "Polyphony," a joint exhibition featuring 10 cross-generational artists, including Su Xiaobai (蘇笑柏) and Charwei Tsai (蔡佳葳). Inspired by musical theory, the minimalist booth allows independent artistic "melodies" to converge, creating a collective landscape that transcends cultural boundaries.
A centerpiece of the fair is multidisciplinary artist Kongkee (江記), represented by gdm (Galerie du Monde). In the Encounters sector for large-scale installations, Kongkee will present a provocative performance piece titled "Price, Value, and Taotie" at Booth EN7 on March 26.
Using neon lights to recreate the "Taotie" — a mythical creature symbolizing gluttony — Kongkee critiques the insatiable consumption of Hong Kong’s capitalist skyline. In a defiant act, the artist will ask the audience to choose between price and value before shattering the neon tubes, challenging the commercialization of the contemporary art market.
In the Discoveries sector for emerging talent, PTT Space presents a solo exhibition by Atayal artist Anchi Lin (林安琪). Her project, "Kindom," draws on Indigenous folklore to imagine a queer utopia and multispecies solidarity.
Mind Set Art Center presents "The Quotidian Epic," featuring Marina Cruz, Ohmaki Shinji, and Nona Garcia. The show focuses on ritualistic labor and family memories, elevating mundane life to a site of historical significance.
Art Basel Hong Kong runs through March 29 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.
