TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Mississippi Legislature passed resolutions supporting closer Taiwan-US relations and Taiwan’s international participation.
The state Senate and House each backed a resolution emphasizing the partnership based on the Taiwan Relations Act and highlighting Taiwan’s importance as a major economic and technological partner. They called for expanding trade and investment and negotiating a US-Taiwan agreement to avoid double taxation.
The resolutions also advocated opening a Mississippi trade and investment office in Taiwan.
The resolutions highlighted shared democratic values while recognizing Taiwan’s role in maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and the Indo-Pacific. They opposed the Chinese Communist Party’s distortion of UN Resolution 2758, asserting that it should not be used to exclude Taiwan from the international community.
The resolutions advocated Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international organizations such as the World Health Organization and the International Civil Aviation Organization. They praised Taiwan as a responsible stakeholder capable of contributing to global issues such as public health, aviation safety, and climate change.
Yvonne Hsiao (蕭伊芳), director-general of Taiwan’s representative office in Houston, said that Taiwan is the world’s 22nd-largest economy and the US’ seventh-largest trading partner, according to the office. She pointed out that Mississippi and Taiwan have enjoyed sister-state relations since 1983.
Hsiao called for deeper bilateral cooperation in trade, education, and technology, as well as more cultural exchanges in the future.
