TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Chair C.C. Wei (魏哲家) said Saturday Chinese robots were fun to look at but were basically useless.
Wei made the remarks while accepting an honorary doctorate degree at Asia University in Taichung, per CNA. He was referring to recent shows put on in China featuring groups of dancing robots.
Wei added that the important part was to give the robots brains. Companies like Nvidia, AMD, and other US firms were building those brains, with 95% of the brain parts manufactured by TSMC, he said.
The company’s technology had increased 100-fold over the past 20 years, according to Wei. Helping the development of AI would be useful for healthcare, while TSMC technology would make robots discover rays of light, feel temperatures, collect information, and provide other useful services, he said.
Reacting to his new degree, Wei praised TSMC founder Morris Chang (張忠謀) for laying the company’s foundation, and for selecting and trusting him. He said he had not contributed much to the company’s success.
Under Wei’s leadership, the semiconductor maker has been rapidly expanding, building or opening new fabs in Japan, the US state of Arizona, and Germany.
