TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) on Saturday thanked US Ambassador to the UN Michael Waltz on Saturday for his support for Taiwan’s bid to play a significant part in international organizations.
The US diplomat was responding to questions Friday by US Representative John Moolenaar, chair of the Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party. Waltz said that supporting Taiwan’s bid to play a meaningful role in global bodies was one of the key missions of the US delegation at the UN.
Waltz also condemned China’s attempts at isolating Taiwan by misrepresenting UN Resolution 2758 as a document approving Beijing’s claims that Taiwan is part of China, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement. The document from 1971 recognized Beijing as the only legitimate representative of China at the UN, but did not address Taiwan’s status.
Lin said the comments by Waltz showed that Taiwan was a responsible and capable partner of the international community. The US was defending Taiwan’s right to link up with the world, also emphasizing Taiwan’s professional abilities in fields including healthcare, digital technology, and supply chain resilience, he said.
The ministry called on the global community to continue its opposition to China’s attempts at turning Taiwan into a domestic issue. The aim is to prevent Beijing from using the resolution as a pretext for future military action against Taiwan, the ministry said.
