TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taiwan Power Company will submit a proposal to reactivate two nuclear power plants to the Nuclear Safety Commission by the end of March, President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) said Saturday.
He identified the facilities as the Guosheng or No. 2 nuclear plant in Wanli, New Taipei, and the Maanshan or No. 3 nuclear plant in Hengchun, Pingtung County. As advocated for years by the Democratic Progressive Party, Taiwan became a nuclear-free homeland in 2025 when the Maanshan plant was switched off in May.
In a speech at a business event in Taichung Saturday, Lai tied the nuclear plant issue to the war in the Middle East. Taiwan’s oil reserves will last more than 100 days, natural gas for 12 to 14 days, so there was no problem for oil and gas supplies until April, the Liberty Times reported.
As the Legislative Yuan had passed amendments to the Nuclear Reactor Facilities Regulation Act, Lai said the government was required to implement the law. The Ministry of Economic Affairs had told state utility Taipower that Guosheng and Maanshan fulfilled the conditions for reactivation.
Taipower is already in the process of preparing for reactivation, and was likely to submit its plan to the Nuclear Safety Commission for review this month, Lai told the Entrepreneur Club.
