TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) on Thursday called for cross-party backing for his special defense bill while inspecting the prototype Hai Kun submarine.
Lai visited Kaohsiung to inspect the Navy’s submarine program, urging opposition parties to support the Cabinet’s proposal without cuts, per CNA. He said bipartisan unity is essential for national defense and peace.
Lai’s visit included the Navy’s Naval Meteorological and Oceanographic Office and inspecting the domestically built Hai Kun and Chien Lung-class submarines.
Speaking to sailors, Lai said submarines are key to strategic deterrence and defending against maritime blockades. He praised the progress of Taiwan’s indigenous submarine program and credited generations of naval personnel for advancing its capabilities.
Lai said even the most advanced weapons depend on well-trained crews, noting that submarine personnel endure long deployments without sunlight. He described them as a “silent force” protecting peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
Lai again urged lawmakers to respect military assessments and swiftly pass the defense bill, warning that focusing only on costs could undermine long-term planning.
