TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Hsinchu City Mayor Kao Hung-an (高虹安) visited the Tokyo Dome Thursday to find inspiration for a smaller arena her city is planning to build.
The Japanese capital’s sports dome recently hosted Team Taiwan’s four World Baseball Classic games, drawing numerous Taiwan fans. Kao’s visit aimed to learn more about the design and operation of a large urban sports complex, per CNA.
Kao announced the plan for an arena in Hsinchu on Jan. 1. The intention is to build a stadium to host both sports events and concerts. The mayor emphasized the importance of transportation amenities in the area, land use, and the role of the service sector.
Tokyo Dome CEO Kitahara Yoshikazu told the visiting Taiwanese delegation that baseball games accounted for 100 days per year, concerts for another 100 days, with the rest devoted to other types of events. As a result, the Tokyo Dome attracted visitors nearly all year round, he said.
The architecture prevents the building from suffering damage from strong winds, while the use of artificial turf guarantees a quick turnaround between events. Hsinchu City Government said it would take these elements into account when designing its stadium.
