TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Hsinchu City Mayor Kao Hung-an (高虹安) signed a memorandum of understanding with Japan’s Miyagi Prefecture to promote tourism and business cooperation, reports said Wednesday.
The prefecture in Northeast Japan includes the capital Sendai and the city of Matsushima. Kao signed the document during a visit to the region, which she described as similar to her city because of its reputation for scientific research, per CNA.
Miyagi Governor Murai Yoshihiro declared his interest in the presence of semiconductor manufacturers and research institutes at Hsinchu Science Park. The Taiwanese city’s experience corresponded with the direction Miyagi’s economy was moving in, he said.
The governor also expects the MOU to promote exchanges between businesses from both areas, with Japanese high-tech manufacturers acquiring new markets in Taiwan.
Hsinchu City Government said Kao’s delegation also visited the Sendai Mediatheque to experience its combination of a library with an arts gallery and an exhibition and performance space. The site could inspire the operation of the new Hsinchu City library, officials said.
