TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Wednesday that if South Korea does not respond by March 31 regarding the mislabeling of Taiwan on its electronic arrival card, Taipei may take reciprocal measures.
The ministry said South Korea’s electronic arrival card continues to incorrectly list Taiwan as “China (Taiwan)," per CNA. It said that, under the principle of reciprocity, Taiwan has already changed the designation of “Republic of Korea” to “South Korea” on its Alien Resident Certificate as of March 1.
Following interagency consultations, potential countermeasures have been reviewed. As part of these efforts, Taiwan implemented the name change on the ARC in keeping with bilateral reciprocity.
The ministry and Taiwan’s representative office in South Korea have repeatedly lodged formal protests about use of the incorrect label in the “previous departure place” and “next destination” fields.
It said that Taiwan and South Korea have long maintained close and cordial exchanges in trade, culture, tourism, and personnel exchanges, and that Taipei deeply values this hard-won friendship. However, the labeling issue has drawn concern from the public and lawmakers.
