TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A second person has died following a fire at Zhuyuan Extra High Voltage Substation operated by Taipower in Hsinchu.
Fire officials said one of the injured contractors hospitalized after the fire succumbed to severe injuries, raising the death toll to two, per CNA. The incident occurred during testing operations at the facility.
The fire broke out during equipment testing on Monday. It also caused a brief voltage dip for some users, though no widespread power outages were reported.
Investigators from the Hsinchu City Fire Department entered the site on Tuesday to examine the scene and identify the ignition point, per UDN. Prosecutors from the Hsinchu District Prosecutors Office also conducted an inspection.
Head Prosecutor Huang Chen-lun (黃振倫) said an autopsy was carried out in the afternoon. Police forensic specialists are working to reconstruct the sequence of events and determine responsibility, he added.
Huang said the case is ongoing and further details will be released once evidence has been reviewed.
Firefighters have completed suppression operations and withdrawn from the site. Follow-up work, including localized cooling and analysis, is being handled by fire investigators.
