TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Hotai Motor is exploring the possibility of introducing US-made large sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks to Taiwan if tariffs on US imports fall to zero.
Hotai Motor Associate Vice President Lin Yu-chang (林裕昌) said the US government has imposed a temporary 15% reciprocal tariff since Feb. 20, and final policies are still pending, per CNA. Hotai is planning for multiple scenarios as it seeks to expand its lineup.
Hotai Motor Spokesperson Weng Ming-lun (翁銘倫) said the company wants to differentiate its offerings and will consult manufacturers on new models.
Hotai forecast Taiwan’s new vehicle registrations will reach 440,000 units this year, up from 414,000 last year. Demand is expected to benefit from reduced commodity taxes on cars under 2,000 cc and greater clarity on US tariff policies.
The company aims to sell 165,000 vehicles this year, targeting a 37.5% market share. This includes 130,000 units for Toyota, 28,500 for Lexus, and 6,600 for Hino. Orders for the redesigned Toyota RAV4 have already surpassed 10,000 units.
On after-sales service, Hotai will introduce repair parts from Advics, a key Toyota supplier, to support Taiwan’s aftermarket network.
Hotai is also advancing hydrogen bus deployment. A pilot program led by the Ministry of Transportation and Communications completed its first case last December in Kaohsiung, with five buses expected to enter service this year in collaboration with South Taiwan Bus and CPC Corp.
