TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A Taiwanese research group said Chinese state-sponsored propaganda in February promoted narratives of “democratic failure” in Taiwan, using high-profile media events to highlight China’s technological capabilities, per CNA.
The Taiwan Information Environment Research Center (IORG) released a report examining messaging directed at Taiwan, finding that performances featuring robots during China’s Spring Festival Gala were used to shape perceptions of the country’s technological strength.
According to the report, the televised gala aired by China Central Television showcased robots performing martial arts, participating in skits, and appearing in musical segments, drawing widespread attention.
IORG said Chinese state media amplified reactions suggesting Taiwanese audiences were impressed by the performances. Posts by Chinese-state outlets, including CCTV4, claimed the program had generated significant interest in Taiwan, with some reports emphasizing appearances by Taiwanese artists.
The report, titled “Last Month China Talks Report,” analyzed content from the CCP, military-affiliated sources, Chinese state media, Hong Kong and Macau outlets, and pro-government influencers. It found that at least 15 similar posts were published by official Chinese media accounts on Weibo between Feb. 17 and 18.
IORG said some Hong Kong media outlets linked to Beijing’s United Front cited Taiwanese internet personalities who portrayed China as advancing rapidly while Taiwan, due to elections and internal political divisions, was falling behind.
The group said such messaging was intended to reinforce narratives that democratic systems are inefficient and hinder progress. By amplifying these views, Chinese state media sought to weaken confidence in Taiwan’s democratic governance while promoting the image of an efficient, technologically advanced authoritarian state.
IORG concluded that claims the robot performances had “amazed Taiwan” and “shocked foreigners” were part of a broader effort to shape public opinion and bolster Beijing’s preferred narrative.
