TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A female red panda arrived at Taipei Zoo from Asahiyama Zoo in Japan to help expand the population of the endangered species, reports said Tuesday.
Taipei Zoo currently houses six males and three females, per CNA. After arriving Monday evening, the animal was undergoing one month of quarantine before joining the other red pandas in Taipei.
Because most of the animals were aging, the zoo’s red panda population needed new blood, officials said. Following advice from experts and assistance from the Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums, Asahiyama Zoo agreed to send Sensen, or Chien Chien (茜茜), to Taipei.
The animal was born on July 5, 2022, according to zoo officials. Once quarantine is complete, it will need to become familiar with the other red pandas before the public has an opportunity to see it.
