TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A fire at Zhuyuan Extra High Voltage Substation in Hsinchu left one contractor dead and two injured on Monday.
The fire broke out around 3:30 p.m. during equipment testing by Taipower, according to the Hsinchu City Government, per CNA. Emergency crews dispatched 20 fire engines, 41 firefighters, and two firefighting robots.
Three contractors working at the site were injured in the incident. One man was found in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest and was later pronounced dead, while the other two sustained burns and a leg fracture, per Liberty Times. The injured workers were taken to a hospital for treatment, the city said.
Officials said the city government is assisting the victims’ families and providing consultations on labor insurance and occupational accident compensation. Authorities are also offering support for any potential labor disputes or civil claims.
The city government ordered Taipower to suspend work at the facility and investigate the cause of the accident. Officials said safety procedures and mechanisms will be reviewed to prevent similar incidents.
Environmental officials warned that smoke from the fire could affect nearby areas in Hsinchu City and parts of Hsinchu County due to north-northwesterly winds. Residents were advised to stay indoors, close doors and windows, and wear masks if going outside.
