TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai (陳其邁) signed a trilateral economic cooperation agreement with Arizona and Japan’s Kumamoto Prefecture on Thursday to form a “semiconductor strategic triangle.”
The agreement, signed with Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs and Kumamoto Governor Kimura Takashi in Arizona, aims to strengthen global semiconductor supply chain security and resilience, per CNA. They were joined by representatives from National Sun Yat-sen University and Industrial Technology Research Institute.
Chen said TSMC’s investments across the three regions represent not only economic and technological cooperation but also carry political significance, per Liberty Times. He described chips as a symbol of the world’s most advanced technologies and a hallmark of freedom in democracies.
Hobbs said the US, Taiwan, and Japan share a long-standing partnership. She added that collaboration among industry, government, and academia will strengthen the three countries’ positions in semiconductors.
Kimura noted that since Kumamoto Prefecture and Kaohsiung established a sister-city relationship in 2017, they have deepened cooperation in tourism, education, and culture. He called the agreement a step forward in cooperation.
The delegation’s next stop will be Nvidia GTC in San Jose, California, which runs Monday to Thursday.
