TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴) said on Saturday that Taiwan hopes to work with international partners to promote gender equality and build a world that leaves no one behind.
Hsiao made the remarks in a video address to a Taiwan Women’s Power Cultural Night event in New York during Taiwan Gender Equality Week, per CNA. The event was held alongside the annual session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women.
Hsiao said Taiwan has consistently demonstrated its commitment to human rights through concrete actions, per Liberty Times. She added that gender equality is a core principle of governance in Taiwan.
Taiwan incorporated the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women into domestic law in 2012, establishing systems such as gender statistics and gender-responsive budgeting, Hsiao explained. She said the framework has helped institutionalize gender equality policies.
She added that Taiwan launched its first National Action Plan on Gender-Based Violence in March 2025, integrating judicial and administrative measures. The plan includes efforts to combat digital gender-based violence and strengthen workplace reporting systems.
Hsiao added social attitudes are shifting, with the proportion of men applying for parental leave rising by more than 11%. She added that Taiwan ranked sixth globally and first in Asia in the Social Institutions and Gender Index, reflecting the country’s democratic values and active civil society.
