TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taiwan’s representative office in Australia is sending staff to Perth to protect the rights of Taiwanese supporters watching a football match against China, reports said Friday.
Taiwan’s women’s team will face China in the quarterfinals of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup on Saturday, per CNA. During previous matches at the event, officials and fans met with problems when they shouted or held up signs to encourage Taiwan.
The foreign ministry said Friday it had instructed staff to travel to Perth to safeguard the rights of fans and to monitor the match. It also alerted Australian police to keep officers ready at the site to ensure the athletes and fans receive fair treatment.
During the match against Vietnam on March 7, not only were fans told by match officials not to shout the name “Taiwan,” but they were also forced to take off T-shirts or caps showing the nation’s name.
