TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Kinmen County's Jinning Township is promoting an oyster festival to revive the local oyster industry as the number of aquaculture workers declines, CNA reported Thursday.
Jinning Township Office said Jinning Oyster Festival will run from April 1 to May 30. Activities include a 1,000-person oyster-shucking event, school visits to oyster fields, and cultural programs, UDN reported.
Jinning Township Mayor Yang Chung-chun (楊忠俊) said oyster farming is physically demanding work and fewer young people want to enter the industry. He said the township hopes to combine tourism with the oyster industry so more visitors can learn about the local tradition.
Jinning Township Council Chair Huang Wen-hsin (黃文欣) suggested organizing a large cross-strait oyster-shucking event in the future. He said such an event could attract tourists because it focuses on everyday culture rather than politics.
Liberty Times reported that the 1,000-person oyster-shucking event will take place on April 18 at the Beishan seawall in Guningtou. The main festival events will be held April 25-26 near Kinmen Bridge plaza, featuring stage performances, oyster education programs, and food contests.
